Cooking frozen chicken strips in an air fryer is the perfect way to get a tasty dinner on the table fast. You can use your air fryer for this recipe without preheating, so it’s quick and easy, too. It makes delicious chicken nuggets that are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
This blog post will share some tips on How to Cook Frozen Chicken Strips in Air Fryer even if you are short on time! For example, instead of ordering takeout chicken strips from the nearest restaurant, try using an air fryer to bake frozen chicken strips in air fryer at home! You can learn more about how in this blog post.
1. What are frozen chicken strips?
Frozen chicken strips are actually pre-cut and shaped pieces of chicken, breaded and seasoned. They’re usually larger than nuggets and not as uniform in shape. Frozen chicken strips can be cooked in the oven or air fryer and work well for both appetizers and main course meals.
You can see how to cook Frozen Chicken Strips in Air Fryer as below.
2. How many type of frozen chicken strips?
There are two main types of frozen chicken strips, breaded and un-breaded.
Breaded frozen chicken strips are made with a batter that contains both flour and bread crumbs. They are typically larger, thicker, and more uniform in shape than their un-breaded counterparts. I personally recommend you to use un-breaded skinless & tenderloins for this recipe because of the meaty taste.
Un-breaded grilling recipes tend to hold more flavor than their breaded counterparts and results in a crispier outside crust while maintaining a moist and juicy interior. For the same reason, un-breaded tend to be less greasy than breaded chicken nuggets! So try them out.

3. How to choose good Frozen chicken strips?
There are some factors you should consider when shopping for your frozen chicken strips:
Read the ingredient list and make sure there is no added MSG, high fructose corn syrup or other unhealthy additives. These days it’s easier than ever to eat healthy and I always try to avoid any food with too much sugar and salt.
Un-breaded tend to be less greasy than breaded chicken nuggets! So try them out.
Look for fully cooked chicken strips that can be heated in the oven or air fryer. The cooking instructions usually require the cook to heat them before serving, so this is an important consideration.

4. How to thaw frozen chicken strips?
If you want your chicken strips to be ready soon, you should thaw them first. To do this, place frozen chicken tenderloins on a microwave safe plate and microwave on high power for about 3 minutes per 1 lb. of tenders (this will vary depending on your microwave). Then check if they are completely thawed by pinching one with your fingers it should feel soft but not mushy like undercooked meat.
If it still feels hard then continue microwaving for 15 seconds at a time until ready. Alternatively, you can also thaw your frozen chicken strips in cold water or in the fridge (this takes a long time though).

5. How to cook Frozen chicken strips?
There are 5 ways of cooking frozen chicken strips:
Air fryer this is my favorite way as it’s fast and easy! You just need to place them on top rack and spray with some oil before starting the air fryer. The cooking time will vary based on how thick your tenders are but roughly around 18 minutes at 370°F/188°C for un-breaded tenders should do the trick.
Oven preheat oven to 400°F/200°C and bake for 12 minutes per 1 lb. of tenders.
Deep fryer heat oil to 320°F/160°C and place frozen tenders inside, cook for about 8 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
Grill place frozen tenders on preheated grill (medium heat) and cook for 15 minutes per side, brush with some oil before flipping over. This method will give you the best results if you’re grilling something else at the same time! You can also use a charcoal grill for this recipe because it’s all about indirect cooking here.
Skillet or fry pan add oil and then cook on medium high heat for about 10 minutes until cooked through, flip over periodically to ensure even cooking.

6. What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks using hot air and convection. It makes use of super-heated air circulating around the food, making it crispy on the outside while remaining tender inside. For me, I prefer to cook un-breaded chicken nuggets in an air fryer because of the even cooking no need to flip them over during cooking like when you’re pan frying!
7. How many type of air fryer in the market now?
There are three types of air fryers available in the market right now:
Digital Air Fryer has a control panel with LCD screen but typically have less cooking space. This is what you get if your budget is around $100-$120.
Convection Air Fryer digital version of an air fryer with additional convection fan that automatically stirs food while it’s being cooked to ensure even browning and no hot spots which will damage the machine over time (my favorite type). These normally cost more than $200 and can fit up to 4 chicken tenders comfortably inside.
Hybrid Air Fryer this combines both convection and pressure cooking, resulting in super fast cooking times but at a cost of lower and poorer quality of finished product.
I recommend sticking with a digital one, either by Philips or GoWise USA but if you’re really on a tight budget then go for the cheapest option (think $50-$80 range).

8. What we need to consider before buying an air fryer?
So what should we consider when buying an air fryer? I’ve listed the things that I think made my cooking experience easy and fun:
Size you don’t want it too big if your cooking space is limited or if you’re not very serious about your kitchen appliances. Trust me, smaller units are cheaper but they are also more compact so it can be challenging to cook larger quantities inside. Make sure to take note of the size where you plan to place your air fryer, for me I have a smallish kitchen so anything bigger than this will occupy too much space!
Cooking capacity how much do you intend to cook at one time? You definitely don’t want under-cooked burnt food just because your air fryer is too small for your batch of chicken tenders. This can be frustrating especially when you’re cooking larger quantities at once!
My biggest air fryer can fit 4 chicken tenders or 5 fish fillets comfortably inside, which I think is just nice because it allows me to cook fast without rushing things around.
Cooking time, temperature and power consumption these three are common factors that affect the taste of your food so believe me, it’s important that you choose one that’s really compatible with the type of food you plan to cook most frequently.
There are so many units out there with different speeds but to find out what works best for you simply start researching all over again by reading real customer feedbacks online.
Value for money
Price I think this is the most important factor because in the end, every penny you spend is hard earned. Just take note that in general, convection air fryers are more expensive than digital ones but when it comes to performance, there’s really no comparison! It depends on what you’re willing to shell out for an amazing cooking appliance so do your research carefully before making a decision.
Ease of use don’t underestimate how simple it has to be especially if you need it during an emergency or unexpected guest arrives and you didn’t have time to cook something delicious yet healthy and fast!
Make sure that your unit comes with easy to understand instructions and buttons and even preprogrammed recipes (most do) because we all know how complex things can be when you’re under pressure!
At the end of it all, don’t ever think that buying an air fryer is unnecessary or unimportant. The good news is there are so many sub $100 units out there that are perfect for every budget and will make your life easier especially if you love to cook or eat healthy!

9. How to Cook Frozen Chicken Strips in Air Fryer?
Step 1 Prep your frozen chicken tenders.
If using un-breaded tenders, place them one by one under running water to remove excess salt or other seasonings. Drain off all the water then pat dry with paper towels until they are completely dry.
Un-breaded tenders are naturally more delicious so I highly recommend you to try these out if you haven’t yet!
Arrange 3 pieces of tenders in a single layer on top rack that comes with air fryer basket. Make sure they do not touch each other and have about 1/4″ space around each piece for best results. The goal here is to get them really crispy so it’s important not to overcrowd the air fryer basket.
Spray with some oil (I usually use olive oil spray for convenience).
Flip them over and spray other side too. Depending on how thick your tenders are, cooking time will vary but roughly around 10 minutes at 370°F/188°C is good. If you have a small airfryer then you can cook 2 batches instead of 1 so the chicken is done in half the time!
Step 2 Prepare your dipping sauce.
For this step, I assume that most people already know their favorite way of preparing their wings. So go ahead and enjoy them with what you like! Personally, I just prefer to eat my frozen chicken strips with some ketchup but don’t be afraid to experiment! 🙂

7. Steps on How to use an air fryer.
Pre-heat. This will be the most time consuming process in this guide but it is necessary if you want great results! If you are cooking un-breaded tenders, cook at 370 degrees Fahrenheit or 191 Celsius for 15 minutes (flipping halfway through). For breaded tenders, 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 204 Celsius and 8 to 10 minutes (flipping halfway through).
Line your basket with aluminum foil and add oil. Even though most baskets come with a nonstick coating, we recommend lining it anyway just in case! After lining the basket, add 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable oil before turning on your fryer. This will help keep your food from sticking to the metal while still giving it that delicious flavor!
Cook it until it’s done! Now that you’ve pre-heated and oiled the basket, place your Tyson chicken tenders in a single layer and turn on your fryer with a timer of 15 minutes if cooking un-breaded or 8 to 10 minutes for breaded tenders. Don’t forget to flip halfway through! Once this is complete remove from fryer, serve, and enjoy! 🙂

8. How to clean an air fryer?
Let it cool down. An air fryer can get hot pretty quickly, so always make sure to let it completely cool first before cleaning.
Empty and remove the parts and accessories. If you want to take a proper look at your fryer or if something spilled over, this is the time to do it! Just be careful as residue from cooking oil may still be on there.
Wash baskets and racks with soap and water (or dishwasher if available). This part is very important as residue left behind can cause your food to stick or taste like last nights dinner instead of their intended flavor!
Once everything has dried, put back together and enjoy! The key here is making sure everything is dry before putting it all back together. If you put a damp basket on the heating element, you could end up with a mess that will be harder to clean!
9. How to maintain an air fryer?
Always use tongs or cooking utensils when removing the basket, rack, or food from an air fryer. Anything metal can scratch the inside of your fryer and cause it to be less non-stick.
Don’t put any of these parts in the dishwasher! As mentioned above, residue left behind may cause issues with your food while cooking (and taste even more like last night’s dinner).

10. Why is my Air Fryer Not Heating?
Make sure the plug is securely pushed into the outlet and make sure your fryer has been plugged in for more than 60 seconds. This isn’t really an issue of how to use an air fryer but I thought it was still worth mentioning as many people forget this very important step! You should also make sure the temperature setting is correct as well since this may cause your unit to run too hot or too cold.
Clean out all built-up residue from inside your machine by following these steps: Unplug your fryer and let it cool down. Remove any accessories or baskets from the cooking compartment. Fill a bowl with hot water, adding dish soap if desired, and place the fries basket inside.
Allow this solution to soak for 30 minutes before removing and rinsing thoroughly. Wipe out the inside of your fryer compartment with a cloth dipped in vinegar or some lemon juice as both work as natural cleaners that won’t leave behind chemicals or residue that can mess up your food’s taste!
If you aren’t getting any heat at all after following these troubleshooting tips, try running the air fryer without something inside to see if it turns on at all first before sending it back. This is a great way to figure out if its an internal issue or a simple fix you can do yourself!

FAQs about cooking Frozen Chicken Strips in Air Fryer.
1. Question: Do you have to cook the chicken first before freezing it for this recipe?
Answer: No, I do not. However cooking them first will make them more flavorful and tender. If you choose to freeze them raw you risk having a drier end result when cooked.
2. Question: How long can these frozen chicken strips be stored in the freezer?
Answer: They can be stored anywhere from 3-6 months depending on your freezer’s storage capabilities and how well they’re wrapped! It’s always best to store foods in containers that are sealed tightly and wrapped securely to prevent any ice crystals or freezer burn from forming! If you notice any pink spots or ice crystals forming at any time toss them out immediately!
3. Question: Can you add seasonings and spices to your breading mixture?
Answer: Yes, you can add in any preferred amounts of spices such as garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasonings etc. I would suggest adding most of the spices into the flour mixture and then some into the wet ingredients for marination too!
You can also play around with different types of cheese like shredded Parmesan or Colby jack which will give a slightly different flavor and less saltiness than mozzarella does. (I used mozzarella because it’s what I had on hand!).
4. Question: Do you need to thaw these chicken strips before cooking?
Answer: No, they do not need to thaw out beforehand…however if thawed there will be less cook time required! These can also be cooked from frozen without thawing them first if you’re looking for a little crunchier texture on the outside.
5. Question: How do you bake these chicken strips inside the oven?
Answer: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place prepared chicken strips onto lined baking sheet making sure they are not touching one another. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown, flipping over halfway through cooking time. Serve immediately or store in fridge/freezer for use at a later time!
6. Question: What breading do you use to make these chicken strips?
Answer: I used my favorite mixture of flour, salt, pepper and Montreal steak seasoning combined with some Parmesan cheese. Feel free to use any preferred combination of spices! (Italian seasonings or cajun seasoning would also work well!).
7. Question: How long do you marinate the chicken for in this recipe?
Answer: I recommend marinating them for anywhere between 2-4 hours but no more than 8 hours please! If marinated for too long it will make the texture extra tender and can cause your breading to slide off…which nobody wants! (Tenderness not meant to be taken literally hahaha).
8. Question: What temperature do you cook these chicken strips at and how long do you cook them for?
Answer: I cooked mine at 370 degrees F, turning them over halfway through cooking time. This took about 10 minutes total to cook thoroughly. They were golden brown and crispy on the outside with tender juicy chicken pieces inside!
These can also be baked in a traditional oven as well as cooked in an air fryer if preferred! Just change your baking temperature to 375 degrees F and air fry for 8-10 minutes or until cooked through, flipping once to evenly cook both sides!
9. Question: How many chicken strips come per pound?
Answer: 1/2 pound of boneless skinless chicken breast comes out to approximately 20-24 strips depending on how thinly they’re cut.
10. Question: What are the best chicken strip breading spices?
Answer: I personally love Montreal steak seasoning or any other regular “Italian” seasoned breading mixture! My favorite combination is flour, salt, pepper and Italian seasonings so feel free to use your preferred seasonings to preference!
Regardless of what you pick it should turn out delicious as long as you mix together some dry ingredients with some wet ones both before AND after dipping into the milk mixture! That way you’ll have an even coating on your chicken strips throughout each piece instead of just a few drenched in sauce hahaha! Thanks for reading everyone! Enjoy!!!
